About Catbox

Catbox.moe is a small, independently run file host that is widely used for sharing images, GIFs, video and audio. It accepts uploads of up to 200 MB and gives each file a short direct link that works well for embedding. The site is run by a single operator and funded by donations made through its store.

Uploads can be anonymous or tied to a free account. Accounts let you keep track of files and create albums of up to 500 files. Anonymous albums cannot be edited or deleted later.

Catbox publishes a simple API at https://catbox.moe/user/api.php, documented on its tools page, and provides an official ShareX configuration and browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Many community libraries exist for languages such as Python, Node.js, Go and Rust.

Litterbox is the temporary sister service at litterbox.catbox.moe. It takes files of up to 1 GB and removes them after a period you choose, from 1 hour to 3 days.

How to upload to Catbox

  1. Go to catbox.moe and select or drag in your file.
  2. Wait for the upload to finish and copy the link that appears.
  3. For a short-lived file, use litterbox.catbox.moe instead and choose an expiry time first.

To manage your files later, create an account before uploading.

Things to know

  • Retention: Anonymous files are removed after 2 years without access. If you want a file gone sooner, the FAQ recommends Litterbox.
  • GIF limit: GIFs are capped at 20 MB, and the FAQ suggests WebM for longer animations.
  • Banned content: Malware, full anime or TV episodes, heavy gore and sexualised depictions of real minors are not allowed, and certain file types are blocked outright.
  • Single operator: Catbox is a one-person project, so support and uptime depend on that individual. Keep your own copies of anything important.
