About Postimages

Postimages has been running since 2004 and began as a tool for posting images on message boards. It remains popular with forum users, and offers plugins and a "Simple Image Upload" mod that adds an upload button to forum posting pages, plus a Windows app and upload by URL.

Free accounts and anonymous visitors can upload images of up to 32 MB and 10000 × 10000 pixels. Images hotlinked from a free account are served at up to 1280 pixels wide, with a link through to the full-resolution page.

The Premium plan raises limits to 96 MB and 65535 × 65535 pixels, serves original resolution to hotlinks, removes ads, allows images to be replaced without changing their URL and supports embedding in email newsletters. The plans page also lists a monthly API allowance (1,000 units on free accounts, 10,000 on Premium).

How to upload to Postimages

  1. Visit postimages.org and choose images, or drag them onto the page.
  2. Pick a resize option if you want one. Signed-in users can also set preferences such as EXIF removal.
  3. Upload, then copy the direct link, thumbnail code or forum code from the results page. Save the deletion link if you are not signed in.

Things to know

  • Retention: Images do not expire from inactivity. After deletion, an image can remain reachable through the CDN cache for around 30 minutes.
  • Content rules: The terms ban unlicensed copyrighted images, violence, hate speech, harassment and anything that might be illegal in the USA or EU. Staff check uploads and may remove images and ban users without warning.
  • Automated uploads: The terms say automatic or programmatic uploads are not allowed, and suggest cloud storage for application image hosting.
  • Linking back: Postimages asks that embedded images link back to their page on the site where possible.
  • Ads: The free service is ad-supported.

Frequently asked questions

Do Postimages uploads expire?

No. The FAQ states that images are not removed because of inactivity. They can still be removed if they break the terms, or deleted by the uploader.

How do I delete an anonymous upload?

Use the deletion link shown on the page that loads after uploading. Keep a copy of it, as it is the way to remove an image you uploaded without an account.

What does Postimages Premium cost?

At the time of checking, Premium cost $14.99 a month, $6.99 a month on a one-year plan ($83.88) or $3.49 a month on a three-year plan ($125.64).
