About dpaste

dpaste.org is a minimal pastebin for sharing code snippets. It runs the open source dpaste application, a Django project written in Python and released under the MIT licence, which can also be installed as an app inside other Django sites.

The site is powered by Nathanael LLC. There is no account system: you paste, choose a syntax highlighter and an expiry time, and get a link. A one-time option creates a snippet that disappears after it has been viewed, which is useful for sharing something once.

dpaste also has a small HTTP API, so you can send snippets straight from a shell or an editor.

How to create a paste

  1. Go to dpaste.org, choose a lexer (syntax) and an expiry time.
  2. Paste your content and select Paste Snippet, or press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac).
  3. Share the URL of the new snippet.

From the command line, send a POST request to the API:

curl -X POST \
  -F "content=print('hello')" \
  -F "lexer=python" \
  -F "expires=604800" \
  -F "format=url" \
  https://dpaste.org/api/

Accepted expires values in the default configuration are onetime, never, 3600, 604800 and 2592000 (seconds).

Things to know

  • Visibility: snippets are readable by anyone with the link. There is no password or encryption option.
  • Deletion: a Delete Now link on each snippet removes it.
  • Privacy: the site states it does not track user behaviour. Cloudflare sits in front of it, and error log files containing IP addresses are kept for one year.
  • Abuse: the footer gives an address for reporting abuse and illegal material.

Frequently asked questions

How long are dpaste snippets kept?

You choose when you paste. The web form offers a one-time snippet, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year or never. Through the API the default lifetime is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days).

Can I delete a dpaste snippet?

Yes. Each snippet page has a Delete Now link that removes it.

Does dpaste track visitors?

The site says it does not track user behaviour. It does use Cloudflare, which may analyse traffic, and may set a cookie to remember your highlighting preference and recent snippets.
