About Lightshot

Lightshot is a lightweight screenshot utility made by Skillbrains. After installation it takes over the Print Screen key: you drag over part of the screen, optionally annotate it, and then save it locally, copy it or upload it to Lightshot's server, which returns a short prnt.sc link.

It is available as a desktop app for Windows (direct download) and Mac (Mac App Store), and as browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Screenshots can be edited at capture time or later in an online editor, and there is a feature to search for visually similar images.

How to upload to Lightshot

  1. Install Lightshot and press the Print Screen key.
  2. Select the area you want and add any arrows, text or highlights.
  3. Choose the upload option to get a prnt.sc link, or save the image locally instead.

Things to know

  • Everything uploaded is public: The privacy policy says every uploaded image is public and viewable by anyone who has the exact URL. There is no password or private option.
  • Guessable links: prnt.sc links use short codes, and they have been widely reported as easy to guess or step through, exposing other people's screenshots. Treat any upload as if anyone could see it.
  • Deletion: There is no self-service delete in the FAQ. You need to email support@skillbrains.com or use the abuse button.
  • Retention: Lightshot does not publish how long uploaded screenshots are kept.
  • Safer use: Lightshot's save to disk and copy to clipboard options do not upload anything, so use those for sensitive material.

Frequently asked questions

Are Lightshot screenshots private?

No. Lightshot's privacy policy states that every uploaded image is public and can be viewed by anyone who types in its exact URL. The short prnt.sc links are easy to guess, so never upload passwords, personal documents or financial details.

How do I delete a Lightshot screenshot?

The FAQ says you can ask the support team to remove it by emailing support@skillbrains.com, or use the abuse button under the image on the website.

Do I need an account?

No account is needed to take and upload screenshots. An account is needed if you want to see a list of all your uploaded screenshots.
